We all know about broomsticks, commonly called “Jhadu” by Indians. We use it every day, to just clean our house. But, have you ever thought, how brooms are made? Its sticks are made from which crop? We know it’s quite weird for you, that brooms are made of crops. But Yes, it is. Here we’re gonna discuss broomsticks and their making process. Here we will discuss the natural brooms made by corn husks, sorghum, and coconut trees. They are called natural Phool Jhadu and Coconut Jhadu (Nariyal Jhadu). Don’t get surprised, broomsticks are made up of corn husks or sorghum and coconut trees.

Crops Use For Making Broomsticks 

Natural brooms are only made of corn husks, sorghum, palm/coconut leaves, and broom grasses.

Corn Husk

Corn husks are the outer cover hair of corn. Commercially bought Corn husks are commonly known as the whole husks, and they are dried in air or sun. For most purposes, the Corn husks need to be soaked in hot water to become flexible. Corn husks are most commonly used to make or decorate foods to be steamed or baked and make broomsticks. Corn husks can be used to present a dish or broomstick but are not edible and should be abandoned after use.

Requirement For Planting Corn Husk 

Corn Husk plants are tropical plants and require hot, humid climates to grow. Therefore, it is limited to a small portion of southern Florida and parts of California and Hawaii. However, the plant can be grown in a container and brought indoors in other environments because they can’t tolerate cold weather and can grow indoors year-round as a houseplant.

Corn Husk plants are tolerant of many different types of soil but mainly prefer soil-rich naturally. The soil must be well-drained; otherwise, roots can kill the plants. Root decay is a fungal disease, occurs when the soil remains very saturated for long periods. Therefore, you should rinse this plant when the top few inches of soil dry out. 

For better land preparation and seeding, farmers use many kinds of implements and farm machines. Utmost, they want productive farming at any cost, as it is entirely based on a small scale. Therefore, they make it more effective for its further use, whether it for broomsticks or another purpose. Farmers’ main motive is making farms better and profitable. Sorghum Plant 

The most grown cereal crop in the world. But here we are discussing that part, which is mainly used for making broomsticks. Sorghum is a genre of 25 species and belongs to the grass family. It is mainly grown cereals for humans, pastures for animals, and grasses and fibers to make brooms. Sorghum plant is also called broom corn for making broomsticks. 

When it’s time to harvest broom corn or sorghum plant, cut stems with a sharp knife or blade. Each pipe is then attached upside down to dry or placed on a flat surface to dry. Drying time should be around three weeks when stems are killed in a warm, covered, and well-ventilated space.

Coconut Tree

A coconut broom is made from coconut tree leaves with zero budget and can be done on a small scale. All parts of the coconut tree are useful in many ways, or some remaining parts are used for humans. It would be best if you had leaflets from three to four from a coconut tree. It will take even less than two hours to make a coconut broom.

Requirement For Planting Coconut Tree

Coconut is produced through seedlings, grown from selected seed nuts. Generally, 9 to 12-month-old seeds are used for Planting coconut.

You can transplant seedlings at the beginning of the southwest monsoon. However, if irrigation facilities are available, it is advisable to plant before the monsoon so that the seedlings get well placed before heavy rains. You can also take up Planting before the beginning of the northeast monsoon. 

For better planting, farmers need many types of equipment for hilly areas and coastal areas. To attach the equipment they also required a tractor. Its process is very simple. You just need some cutter machines. As it is a small-scale business and in many rural areas, people are not able to buy the machines. The government also helps them. the government started many schemes for small scale businesses 

If you are a trained worker, you can produce around 18 to 20 dozen brooms with this process within an eight-hour daily shift.
