How the Hospitals in Pakistan are combating Covid-19

We all know we are going through history’s worst pandemic. The whole world was witnessing the unbelievable images of the busiest sites of the world that were shutting down. The whole world stopped and people were stuck in their homes. The deadly pandemic took thousands of lives, and people lost their loved ones. We saw horrible incidents from around the world of people begging for oxygen and the ventilator for their family members.

When the whole world changed their health policies amidst covid, many countries made new hospitals and new medical centers, hospitals in Pakistan were struggling with the insufficient and the less number of hospitals we have. The hospitals were filled with patients and the cases were increasing day by day. There were many people stranded in homes doing home medication, buying oxygen cylinders.

Lack of public hospitals

Pakistan seriously lacks a number of public hospitals and the hospitals which are present lack the basic equipment and facilities. The majority of the population of Pakistan cannot afford private healthcare facilities because it can cost them a fortune. Only the privileged people can avail of those services from private hospitals. During covid the basic issue that arose was this lack of public hospitals, people could not find a bed in any hospital.

The hospitals refused to admit the patients due to a lack of beds and equipment. Many people were advised to stay home and do home medication but not many people could afford that. People in serious condition needed to be admitted to the hospital, there were many people who needed intensive care and ventilators which can only be provided in a hospital, not at home. People lost their lives and their loved ones due to the lack of hospitals in Pakistan.   

Shortage of medicines

Another major issue arose during covid, and it was the shortage of medicine that was subscribed to prevent covid. People used this pandemic as an opportunity to make more money, hospitals did not have the medicines, the pharmacies refused to give medicines and if they did it was thrice the original price of the medicines. When people tried to do self-medication, the shortage of medicines became a big hurdle for them.

People who could not afford the medicines started trying the home remedies, which turned out to be more disastrous for their health. The homemade herbal medicines started reacting and other diseases started hitting people like diarrhea. Lack of medicines and lack of hospitals led to the increase in death numbers of people in Pakistan.

Lack of ethical consideration

Many public hospitals in Pakistan did not follow the basic Sops of covid. There were a large number of people in the hospitals and no consideration of personal spacing.  The doctors and nurses could not maintain the safe spaces between People that standing in Wards. The patients were laying side by side, even two patients in one bed.

The quarantine facilities of our hospitals were not up to the mark, people were advised to quarantine at home rather than hospitals. There was more risk of infection in hospitals because of a lack of sanitization arrangements. Many videos got viral from the hospitals that doctors and patients were violating the sops fixed by the government regarding covid.

Shortage of oxygen cylinders

During covid, people witnessed the worst shortage of oxygen cylinders. The covid directly affects the lungs of the person and to cure this person need a certain amount of oxygen supply. The poor people were struggling with their lives and finding oxygen while an abundant amount of oxygen was present just for the elite class. The whole of Pakistan was facing this dilemma whether it was hospitals in Multan, Lahore, Karachi, or any other city. The price of oxygen cylinders also got so high that even if they were available, many people could not afford them.

Conclusion

Public hospitals in Pakistan were not totally ready to combat the pandemic. During these worst times, people felt a serious lack of public hospitals and basic healthcare facilities in hospitals. The shortage of medicines and oxygen cylinders revealed the true face of the Pakistani healthcare system. Many people lost their lives and many families lost their loved ones because of the lack of healthcare facilities in Pakistan.
