Biofuel Manufacturing By Biofuel Crops And Crop Cultivation


Biofuel, any fuel derived from biomass, that is, plant or algae material or animal waste. Since you can replenish such feedstock material readily, Biofuel is considered a renewable energy source, unlike fossil fuels such as petroleum, coal, and natural gas.

Biofuels include many things to manufacture:

  • Ethanol (usually made from corn and sugarcane).
  • Biodiesel (sourced from vegetable oils and liquid animal fats).
  • Green diesel (derived from algae and other plant sources).
  • Biogas (methane derived from animal manure and other digested organic material).

Biodiesel is a liquid fuel produced from renewable sources, such as new and used vegetable oils and animal fats, and is a cleaner-burning replacement for petroleum-based diesel fuel. Biodiesel is non-toxic and biodegradable and is generated by mixing alcohol with vegetable oil, animal fat, or recycled cooking grease.

Crops used to generate biofuels are generally high in sugar (such as sugarcane, sugarbeet, and sweet sorghum), starch (such as maize and tapioca), or oils (such as soybean, Rapeseed, coconut, sunflower). They are cultivated as other crops are. But these crops need better cultivation, the primary purpose of making Biofuel. Farmers cultivate them with the normal process, as they cultivate different crops. They mainly prefer the Same Deutz Fahr Tractor to grow the crops and make the farms productive.

Biofuel Crops In India

In India, common crops for Biofuel manufacturing are soybean, Rapeseed, sunflower, cottonseed, palm seed, sugarcane, corn, and mustard. Here we are describing some major biofuel crops in India. 


This crop has the most significant contribution to biofuel production. The corn kernels are firstly crushed and then mixed with warm water, and yeast is added. The yeast makes the mixture turn into energy-producing alcohol. Biofuel produced from corn or sugarcane has the advantage of releasing a lesser amount of carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxide, and sulfur into the atmosphere than energy commodities like gas. Biofuel also reduces smog, which can minimize health problems, especially for the urban population.  


Rapeseed oil is used in Biofuel manufacture. Firstly, Rapeseed is crushed to generate Biofuel. Rapeseed oil is a necessary form of biodiesel fuel today. Canola has a vaster advantage than Rapeseed. Canola is a different variety of Rapeseed. The Canola has lower Uric acid content, making it better and healthier for animals and humans to consume. Commonly, which Biodiesel made from vegetable oil does not perform well in cold climates. Most vegetable oils have a higher saturated fat percentage, due to which crystals tend to form and negatively impact a car’s engine to perform efficiently. But due to the lower saturated fat content in canola oil, it is harder for ice to form in colder temperatures. 


Apart from corn, sugarcane is also used to generate Biofuel. However, producing Biofuel from sugarcane is six times less valuable than producing Biofuel from corn.  

Palm Oil

This edible oil is obtained from the fruit of palm trees and is one of the more energy-efficient biodiesel fuels. Biodiesel from palm oil is beneficial for the ecosystem as it releases less carbon dioxide gas than gasoline. 


Another primary source for Biofuel since it holds characteristics, which can be crucial for the world to depend less on crude oil. The Jatropha bush overgrows and remains without much trouble when water resources and their availability is limited. Also, seeds of Jatropha have a 40 percent oil content. The Jatropha bush has a lifespan to grow of 50 years, and even if the land is affected by pest attacks or drought, it can still grow appropriately there. India’s biodiesel industry focuses on this biofuel plant and contributes to economic benefits to the farming community. Scientific surveys indicate that roughly around 2.47 acres (1 hectare) of Jatropha can grow around 752 kilograms to 2.20 tons, calculated as 1995.81 kilograms of oil. 


This crop is prepared to produce Soybean oil, which is then managed to manufacture Biodiesel. Motor vehicles, cumbersome equipment, and buses can run on pure soybean biodiesel or blend Biodiesel and diesel. Soybean biodiesel is environmentally more beneficial than corn biodiesel. Researchers had managed experiments to evaluate the amount of energy needed for growing corn and soybeans, in addition to the energy required to change those crops into biofuels. Through experiments, it concluded that the number of fertilizers and pesticides are needed less in soybeans. One bushel around 25.40 Kgs of soybeans typically produces about 1.5 gallons or around 5.7 liters of Biodiesel. 


Although this oil is mainly used for frying potato chips and other snacks, it can transform cottonseed oil into Biodiesel. The oil makes up around 20 percent of the cotton plant. More than 3.78 liters of cottonseed must replace 3.78 liters of standard diesel fuel. An acre of cottonseed produces around 132.5 liters of oil, a third less than Rapeseed. 

Cultivation Of Biofuel Crops

Cultivation is the Loosening and tilling up of the soil. The soil around existing plants is cultivated by hand using a hoe or by machine using a cultivator to destroy weeds and promote growth by increasing soil aeration and infiltration. A shovel or plow cultivates soil being prepared for the planting of a crop. To plow better, farmers choose tractors other than choosing hand works.
